What does sleep have to do with my child's behavior?

9 out of 10 children present with at least one outward symptom of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)

Fortunately spotting the signs of SDB such as ADD/ADHD, irritability, aggressive behavior, dark circles under the eyes and poor school performance is simple.  If evaluated early, these symptoms can be reversed.

Compromised Airway

A compromised airway may reveal itself as open mouth breathing, frequent ear and throat infections and is most noticeable in dark circles under the eyes.  This is not normal, it is not JUST part of being a kid.  It’s a clue to an underlying condition.

REM sleep

REM sleep is critical for brain development and deep sleep is reparative sleep that allows growth and repair.  If your child is not receiving enough oxygen, they will not enter REM sleep and cannot grow or develop properly. Children with behavioral issues often can not enter into this reparative sleep stage and wake groggy, grouchy and irritable. Learning and retention are improved with reparative sleep.

Bed wetting

Nighttime Enuresis

Bedwetting is another sign of SDB (sleep disordered breathing).

REM Sleep

As in the ADHD/ADD patient, children that wet the bed may have a decrease in oxygen which interferes with their cycles of sleep.  Particularly REM sleep which is decreased from the decrease in oxygen.

Delta Sleep

A decrease in REM sleep will increase the Delta Sleep.  This sleep stage is very difficult to wake from, it is a deep sleep that interferes with the child’s bladder control.  They are too deeply sleeping to recognize the bladders signals.

So what's the answer?

Sleep Disordered Breathing is a silent epidemic

Children who breathe poorly often have mis-alignment of the jaws and bite.  Parents notice crooked teeth and gummy smiles.  With a few simple measurements and photos, a flexible template worn in the mouth can be fabricated to help growth and development.

Facial structure and proper tongue position

The jaws are naturally widened when the tongue is held in the proper place.  Airway is improved by correcting the position of the upper and lower jaw relative to each other and to the bones of the face.

Eruptive Guidance Treatment

Using the gentle, eruptive forces of incoming teeth, these guiding appliances help the dental arches to develop the way nature intended.

Building on nature

Upper and lower jaw positions

A child’s body is growing and developing tremendously from birth and then a growth spurt occurs.  Our treatment captures the ability to guide the development of the upper and lower jaws prior to permanent teeth to take advantage of the pliability.

After Growth Spurt occurs

Once the permanent dentition is settled, the fibers holding the teeth into position become inflexible. Traditional bands and brackets fight against these permanently set fibers, often resulting in the teeth going back to their original positions.  Treatment is then restarted. It’s expensive in time and money.

Early guidance

Eruptive guidance treatment begins when the first permanent teeth erupt, around age 5.  Using a flexible, comfortable oral appliance that is worn at night or a few hours daily, the jaw, palate and dentition develop correctly.  The bonus is that the teeth come in straight and permanently fix in that position. No regression back, no need for retainers – lifelong changes.

A new way to solve an old problem

Eruptive Guidance

Wearing a removable appliance achieves a level of hygiene that is a struggle with bands/brackets. Because there is nothing attached, teeth  are easy to clean. The flexible removable appliance is easy to clean with toothpaste and water.  There are no attachments to the teeth so there are no food restrictions.  There are no permanent metal wires and brackets attached to the teeth- EVER.

Airway management

This soft, flexible appliance is FDA approved, BPA free, Phthalate free and does not contain latex.  It is worn at night or during the day a few hours and expands the palate dramatically, which in turn opens the airway.  It trains the tongue to the proper position allowing it’s force to guide the development of the jaw, the joint and floor of the nasal cavity.  Promotes nasal breathing which in turn lowers infections in the nose and throat.

Early Guidance Avoids Extractions

No more removal of perfectly healthy teeth to make room in an overcrowded mouth.  Start early, guide the expansion and growth and give the body room to breathe.  Make way for the teeth to come into position, allow the airway to expand and have healthy smiles and airways for life.
